Sanuk Bubble Sling: ETPU Bead-Foam Footbed

Bubble Sling brings together a stretchy sling upper, an ETPU bead-foam footbed and a sponge-rubber outsole. Our focus was the middle of that stack: shaping the beaded foam around the sandal outline and making sure the footbed could meet both the upper and outsole cleanly.

    The challenge

The beaded surface had to work as both a footbed and part of the sandal’s visual identity.

Sanuk makes the ETPU beaded-foam footbed a visible part of the Bubble Sling story. That means the development brief cannot stop at cushioning. The outline, profile, bead appearance, firmness, upper connection and outsole interface all need to arrive at the sample review together.

For a similar project: For a visible foam footbed, give us the aesthetic direction and assembly details alongside the cushioning target. That combination helps us develop a part that works in the product, not just on a material data sheet.

    Our work

    What We Did

We focused on the geometry, material, interfaces and checks needed to move the part into shoe testing.

    01

    Built around the sandal outline

We started with the approved footbed geometry, size range and available stack height so the component could fit the complete sandal construction.

    02

    Turned material direction into targets

We organized firmness, resilience, weight and compression behavior around the selected ETPU bead-foam platform.

    03

    Connected appearance and assembly

Bead color, surface character, edge geometry, sling-upper connection and outsole interface were reviewed as one visible component package.

    04

    Made validation practical

The team could check dimensions, surface consistency and material behavior on the footbed, then confirm fit, feel and durability in the assembled sandal.

    Result

    The Result

The team had a clearer path from a recognizable bead-foam idea to a reviewable footbed component. Material feel, appearance and assembly interfaces could be evaluated together instead of becoming separate decisions late in development.

In the finished shoe: Sanuk describes Bubble Sling with a stretch sling upper, a resilient ETPU beaded-foam footbed and a Happy U tread sponge-rubber outsole. Each has a different job. We focus on the footbed and the two interfaces that connect it to the rest of the sandal.

    FAQ

    Common Questions

What does “popcorn” footbed mean here?

It refers to the expanded TPU bead appearance and construction. For development, we still need to define the exact material grade, firmness, density, profile, surface and acceptance methods for the project.

Which inputs help us start quickly?

Send the footbed geometry, size range, target stack height, firmness and resilience direction, bead color, upper and outsole interfaces, benchmark sample and required tests.

Can appearance and cushioning be developed separately?

They influence each other. Bead fusion, surface pattern, profile and material selection can affect both the visual result and how the component feels, so we review them together.

Where is the finished sandal still needed?

The assembled sandal is needed to confirm fit, upper connection, step-in feel, flex and durability across the complete construction.
