The Bubblecush footbed is not hidden inside the shoe—it is the surface people see and stand on. We approached the brief by bringing the multicolor bead pattern, target feel, water-friendly use and sandal interfaces into the same development conversation.
Surface pattern and wet-use requirements
The challenge
A highly visible footbed had to stay consistent in both appearance and construction.
Sanuk presents Bubblecush with a multicolored ETPU footbed and water-friendly construction. The component therefore needed more than a material selection: the color mix, bead-like surface, outline, edge profile, strap relationship and outsole bond all had to be defined in a way the team could inspect and repeat.

We focused on the geometry, material, interfaces and checks needed to move the part into shoe testing.
Defined the visual target
We organized the color direction, bead distribution, surface pattern and edge appearance into a reviewable component reference.
Set material and feel requirements
We connected the ETPU direction to project targets for hardness, density, resilience, compression behavior and surface feel.
Designed around wet-use interfaces
The strap connection, outsole interface, exposed edges and water-exposure expectations were considered before sampling.
Checked the component in two stages
Appearance, dimensions and material behavior can be reviewed on the footbed; fit, flex, bonding and water-friendly performance are confirmed in the complete sandal.
Result
The Result
The approach gave the team one component brief that connected the Bubblecush look with the construction needed to support it. Instead of reviewing color, feel and assembly separately, they could judge the footbed as the visible center of the sandal.
In the finished shoe: Sanuk describes Bubblecush with a quick-drying strap, recycled jersey lining, multicolored ETPU footbed and sponge-rubber outsole. We develop the footbed within that construction, while the complete sandal determines the final fit, flex, water behavior and durability.
